Claude, ChatGPT, & AI
for UK small business.
Anthropic-certified across three Claude credentials. We build AI workflows for UK small businesses on the toolchain they already use — Xero, FreeAgent, HubSpot, Capsule, Stripe, GoCardless, Shopify — and we train the team that uses them.
AI for small business, without the brochure.
The press-release version says AI replaces staff. What happens in practice across our UK SMB clients is narrower: a slice of the repetitive language-shaped work (drafting, classifying, summarising, reconciling) moves to AI, and the same people spend that recovered time on customer-facing or planning work that was sitting in the "when I have a minute" pile.
A team that saves a day a week between chasing invoices, drafting follow-ups and reformatting supplier feeds usually puts that day into customer conversations or the next thing the business has been putting off. The clients who pull ahead are not the ones with one impressive AI showpiece. They have four or five small workflows that have been running for months.
We hold three Anthropic certifications — AI Fluency for Small Businesses, Claude with Amazon Bedrock, and Claude Code in Action — covering training, deployment and the engineering behind production AI work.
Claude or ChatGPT — which one?
For day-to-day chat, the consumer-level gap is too small to be the decision driver — pick whichever your team opens every morning and run it for a month. For automation built into your systems, choose per task; we routinely use both providers in a single workflow. The longer version is in our Claude vs ChatGPT for UK small business post.
| Task | Claude (Anthropic) | ChatGPT (OpenAI) |
|---|---|---|
| Long-document analysis | Claude — stronger on careful reading | ChatGPT — capable, sometimes more confident than warranted |
| Tool use & workflow automation | Claude — strong tool-use API, clean handoffs | ChatGPT — strong, wider plugin ecosystem |
| Image generation | Not native (text-to-image not built in) | ChatGPT — GPT Image 2 built in |
| Voice | Not native | ChatGPT — native voice in app |
| Writing & drafting | Claude — more nuanced, less generic in our hands | ChatGPT — fluent, more formulaic by default |
| UK accounting integrations (Xero, FreeAgent) | Custom API build | Custom API build |
| Per-seat price (UK consumer plan) | Claude Pro ~£14–£16/month | ChatGPT Plus ~£16–£18/month |
| Data residency for paid plans | Team excludes prompts from training | Business/Enterprise excludes prompts from training |
Prices and capabilities as of May 2026. Claude and ChatGPT both price in USD — GBP figures are approximate at current exchange rates.
What we build for UK small businesses.
Six shapes that pay back fastest. All built as workflows over open-ended agents, with a human approving the last 5% wherever the cost of being wrong is real.
Invoice chasing & finance ops
Overdue Xero or FreeAgent invoices get a chasing email drafted in your tone, with a one-click approve step before anything reaches the customer. Stripe and GoCardless settlements reconcile to your ledger overnight; month-end close prep arrives in your inbox on the 1st.
Sales & lead triage
Inbound enquiries from HubSpot, Capsule or your website form get classified and routed to the right person, with personalised follow-up drafted ready to send. Sales meetings open with a one-page summary of each lead's recent activity instead of a scramble through tabs.
Content & marketing
Supplier product feeds get rewritten into SEO copy in your shop's voice (the bike-shop pattern that took £2k of annual online sales to £200k+). Blog posts and newsletters draft from a one-paragraph brief; A/B variants come at the same time, not as an afterthought.
Customer support
Tickets get classified and routed automatically, with a reply drafted for a human to approve before it goes out. Long email threads condense into structured notes; a private Claude assistant trained on your knowledge base answers the team's repeat questions without the back-and-forth.
Document analysis
Structured data extracts from supplier invoices, contracts and PDFs; contract versions compare side by side with the changes that actually matter flagged. Meeting transcripts turn into action lists. Specific-risk reviews (data-protection clauses, exclusivity terms, indemnities) become a checklist pass rather than a careful read.
Internal AI assistants
A private chat AI for the team, trained on your products, processes and policies. Staff get the same kind of answer a senior colleague would give — without sending the question into a public model where the data could end up anywhere.
AI for the UK toolchain, not the US one.
Anthropic's May 2026 Claude for Small Business launch ships with prebuilt plugins for QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Stripe and Square. That fits a US-shaped small business well. It doesn't fit most UK SMBs — accounting in Xero, FreeAgent or Sage; payments in GoCardless or Zettle; CRM in Capsule.
The model is the same. The integrations are missing. That gap is where we work — we build custom Claude and ChatGPT workflows against the UK toolchain, using the same APIs the official bundles run on. A bike shop pipeline that took online sales from roughly £2,000 to over £200,000 in year one runs on this pattern — see the case study.
For longer-lived builds we host the AI side of the workflow on a multi-provider platform — AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry — each of which exposes Claude alongside Llama, Mistral and other major models through a common API, with every Claude release shipping on all three on the day of the Anthropic announcement. Swapping the model behind a workflow step from Sonnet to next year's strongest model becomes a config change rather than a rewrite, and workflows pick up upgrades instead of getting stuck on whichever model was current at launch. Claude with Amazon Bedrock is one of our three Anthropic certifications.

Frequently asked questions.
What's the best AI for a UK small business — Claude or ChatGPT?
It depends on the task, not the brand. Claude is what we put first into careful writing, long-document reading, and tool use inside a workflow. ChatGPT is what we put first into image generation, voice, and integrations with SaaS tools that already have an official ChatGPT plugin. For day-to-day chat use, the gap between the two consumer plans is too small to drive the decision — team preference after a week of use will tell you more than a spec sheet will. In production workflows we pick per step: Claude Haiku for cheap classification, Sonnet or GPT-5-class for nuance, GPT Image 2 for visuals. Is Claude available for UK small businesses?
Yes. Claude Pro (about £14/month annual, £16 monthly — billed in USD as $17 and $20) and Claude Team (about £16/seat/month annual, £20 monthly — $20 and $25) sign up directly from anthropic.com. Anthropic also launched Claude for Small Business in May 2026, a bundle of prebuilt workflows for QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot and a few other tools — UK-accessible, but the integration list skips Xero, FreeAgent, GoCardless, Sage and Zettle. See our Claude for Small Business UK post for the full breakdown. How much does AI automation cost for a UK small business?
Daily use of Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus is £14–£18 per user per month. A first custom workflow — invoice chasing, lead triage, supplier feed rewriting — typically lands in the £8,000–£20,000 range to build, then runs in pence per task once live. Larger systems with multiple integrations and audit trails sit above that. Prompt caching cuts repeat-context reads by about 90%, and the Batch API discounts non-urgent jobs by 50%, so the monthly running bill on most SMB workflows is double-digit pounds. What AI workflows actually save time for small businesses?
Repetitive, language-shaped work with clear inputs and outputs. The shapes we ship most often: chasing overdue invoices with a draft-and-approve email gate; triaging inbound leads from a HubSpot or Capsule queue; rewriting supplier product feeds into SEO copy for an online store; summarising support transcripts into structured notes; classifying tickets and routing them; reconciling Stripe or GoCardless settlements against ledger entries. All run as workflows, not open-ended agents — a person signs off the last step wherever a bad output costs money.Do you offer AI training for small business teams?
Yes. Half-day and full-day Claude and ChatGPT workshops, customised to your industry. Built on Anthropic's 4D Framework from the AI Fluency for Small Businesses programme — Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence. Non-technical teams come out able to write prompts that work first time, build small repeatable workflows in their own tools, and tell when AI is the wrong answer. See AI Training for details. Will AI replace small business staff?
Not in the way the headlines suggest. What changes is that a slice of repetitive language work moves to AI and the same people put that recovered time into customer-facing or planning work that was sitting in the "when I have a minute" pile. We have not yet had a UK SMB client use the work we delivered to remove a role; several have freed up the equivalent of a day a week per person. The risk going the other way is real — a competitor automates the slice your team still does by hand and undercuts you on the price of the deliverable. Is it safe to put business data into Claude or ChatGPT?
Depends on the plan and the data. Paid business plans (Claude Team, ChatGPT Business/Enterprise) contractually exclude your prompts and outputs from training. Consumer plans (Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus) do not give the same protection. Either way, personal data, payment data, and genuinely confidential business records should not go into a chat interface without checking the plan terms against your GDPR position. A short written AI use policy — what's approved, what isn't, who signs off — handles most of the day-to-day risk. We help clients draft one as part of training.
